Jockey Morris
Jockey was formed in Birmingham in 1949, so next year will see us celebrating 75 years of dancing.
The side started from a folk dance group in the city. In the very early days our founder Gwen Johnson, who had initiated the building of a morris side from the group. entered the side into a dance competition. We didn’t have a name, but Gwen lived on Jockey Road in Sutton Coldfield and so we became Jockey!
Our kit is white shirt and trousers and baldricks in the blue of Birmingham with a rosette representing the Sutton Rose.
Jockey mainly performs Cotswold morris, with some Border dances and very occasional sword.
We perform in our city, of course, but also throughout the country and in Europe (particularly, in recent years, Belgium where we have many friends and a great following)
Black Adder Morris
Based in Selly Oak, Birmingham, Black Adder Morris is an any age, any gender Morris dancing side which enjoys dancing, making music and having fun together.
Our dancing style is lively and from the North West Morris tradition, which is why we wear clogs, as was done in the mills of Lancashire. Our particular interpretation of this tradition is highly personal to our side. When we dance out in the community we dance in clogs and wear rag jackets.
Ragged Oak
Ragged Oak are a woodland-dwelling gang of folk-dancers and musicians who appear on and around the ancient high-days & holidays at special sites and events across the country.
We perform traditional and self-penned dances related to the seasons and local folklore, especially of North Worcestershire, where we were found in 2018
Aelfgythe Border Morris
Aelfgythe Border Morris are from Alvechurch just to the south of Birmingham, we are all female dancers supported by a wonderful mixed group of musicians.
We perform a mixture of old and completely new dances in the Border style in our distinctive black and silver rags, both maintaining and pushing the boundaries of tradition.
We are very much looking forward to this event!
Foxs Morris
Foxs Morris started in 1999, with a group of friends who were all members of the ‘Friends of Cookley School’ (FOCS). Thus the name ‘FOXS Morris’ came to be. We wear mainly red and green as these were the colours of the school uniform at the time.
We are now a larger group, but we still retain our friendly atmosphere. We continue to practise at Cookley School in Worcestershire with members coming from all around the area.
Foxs Morris perform dances in the ‘Border’ Morris style.
